Ditch The Boxed Cereal, 7 From Scratch Breakfast Ideas

Ditch The Boxed Cereal 7 from scratch breakfast ideas | https://www.hannahhepworth.com #nocereal #realfoodbreakfast

Most mornings I try  not to resort to cereal.  My kids have always been a bit picky with food and I like to get a good dose of nutrition in their bellies before they start their day and head off to school.  For that reason I try and stay away from processed cereal that’s full of preservatives and empty calories.

I’m not willing to have a list of 50 breakfast recipes that I switch between each day.  I’m all about keeping it simple!  I’ve found 7 simple breakfast ideas that work for me in this stage of life and that my kids also enjoy.   I’m not about to labor over crepes each morning but I personally don’t mind whipping up some waffle batter in my Vitamix.

One thing that can really make your morning go more smoothly is to think ahead and prep the night before, when you are cleaning up your kitchen after dinner, whip up the waffle batter then and keep it in your fridge.  Set out the waffle iron or get some butter in your german pancake pan the night before, anything you can do to make the next morning a bit easier will really help.  Sometimes I do soaked oatmeal (see below) and set up some oatmeal in a saucepan with water, salt and bit of kefir to soak it, then the next morning I just add natural cane sugar, butter, a bit more water and let it simmer for a few minutes and it’s done in no time.

It’s important to remember that cereal is a highly processed food that is laden with sugar and refined grains.  It contains preservatives, coloring, flavorings, GMO’s and much more.  To avoid all this yucky stuff in your kid’s bodies opt for simple homemade breakfasts like the 7 listed below!

Here’s a list of 7 simple breakfast ideas with links to the actual recipe.

German Pancakes: You can soak them or not.

Waffles: Super quick to whip up in a blender.

Yogurt and Granola: Good quality store bought yogurt (read labels) topped with some homemade granola.

Oatmeal: I buy organic oats in bulk and cook in the morning or soak the night before.  To soak add 1 cup oats, 1 1/2 c. water with 3 T. kefir and a pinch of salt to a saucepan.  Cover with a lid and let soak for 12+ hours.  The next morning add 1/2 c. water, sugar and butter and simmer for about 5 minutes.  Voila, soaked oatmeal.

Smoothies: There are so many possibilities here you can browse my green smoothie recipes.

Eggs: Scrambled or fried over toast. Whatever your heart desires.

Pancakes: Always a childhood favorite.  You don’t have to use sprouted flour, regular whole wheat will do just fine.  Always top with REAL maple syrup.

I’d love to hear what you have for breakfast at your house.  Did I miss any simple non cereal breakfasts?  Please share your ideas in the comments below or head over to facebook and share there as well!

Have a wonderful, healthy day.
