Today I decided to do something a bit different. I’ve had a lot of questions lately about kefir. I’ve written about it in a couple recipes and in this post on probiotic foods. Kefir is one of my all time favorite super foods that I consume daily. I took a bunch of pictures and started writing up a post on how to take care of your kefir grains and then realized it would be a whole lot easier and more concise in a video! It’s my very first one so be nice!!!
How did u start? Where did the first jar come from?
I got the kefir grains from a friend but you can purchase them at the following links…http://www.culturesforhealth.com/milk-kefir-grains.html

Hi Hannah, can kefir can be done with coconut milk?
Yes, I’ve made my own coconut milk, and added kefir grains and made it the same way as cows milk. You are supposed to “refresh” the kefir grains in cows milk every couple weeks though. Just make a batch of kefir with cows milk then strain and put back into coconut milk. I’ve heard people make it with goat’s milk too.
I’ve been told that you can freeze the kefir grains for future use. What is your counsel regarding freezing kefir grains?
I have heard that as well although I personally haven’t tried it. I would definitely try it in the future though. I’m not sure if over time the beneficial bacteria would die or not. I also have read that dehydrating them is another way to preserve them. Check out this article for more on this subject. http://www.culturesforhealth.com/how-to-take-a-break-from-making-kefir
Hey Linda,
Just wanted to get back to you on this and let you know I recently froze some grains. I just wrapped them in plastic wrap and kept them in the freezer for a few weeks until I was ready to start making kefir again. I let them thaw and placed them in whole milk. It took a few days but they finally bounced back and turned the milk into kefir! It worked!
My mom buys this all the time and it can be expensive! I can’t wait to experiment with it and show her how to make some. Great post Hannah!!
Oh good! I’m glad it was helpful, if she needs some kefir grains have her check her local health food store, if there is one in her town:)

Thanks for the simple instructions on making kefir, good job making the video. I will be trying it soon, I’ve been wanting to make it for a bit.
Thanks for making this easy to understand video on making kefir. I’ve been wanting to try and make some kefir for a bit. Now I think I can !
Good! I’m so happy you found this information helpful:)
Hi Hannah, thanks for the video, its much simpler than I imagined. I see on pinterest that some ferment it twice for a mellower taste? Have you done this and if so does it really make a difference? Thx!
Hi Shaunna,
I have done a second ferment and it does actually mellow out the taste, however, it just got to be too much to do, so I personally just do a basic 24 hour ferment. It also increases the nutrition which is nice, but I say if you already feel overwhelmed with healthy eating just do the basics and that’s still better than most!
