Breakfast is an easy place to eliminate processed foods. Yes, boxed cereals are definitely convenient but they have a lot of junk in them as well. Making granola is a great alternative to eating the boxed stuff every morning.
I love granola. It is easy to make a big batch, it keeps for a long time and it is versatile. You can eat it with milk topped with fruit, over yogurt, in granola bars, in a smoothie and straight out of the container! A few summers ago I sold granola at the local farmer’s market along with some homemade crusty artisan bread (which I will share at a later date!). Since then I have revamped the recipe a bit to make it a little healthier by using healthier sweeteners and adding some coconut oil. Here is my basic tried and true granola recipe that we always have on hand.
So where do you get your coconut oil? Any recommendations? I have heard of lots of awesome uses for it!
I used to buy it at the regular grocery store for $10 for a 16 ounce jar. Now I purchase it through a good co-op called Bountiful Baskets, it’s half the price. 64 ounces for $20. It’s organic, virgin and expeller pressed. I know some people who order Nutiva brand through Amazon and I hear people recommend buying online from Mountain Rose Herbs as well. I’m working on a post about coconut oil right now so check back later for more info!
