Whole Food Protein Shake

My littlest boy has always been pretty small.  It shouldn’t surprise me much because I am 5 ‘ 1” and come from a family of small people myself.  In addition to being super small he is also a picky eater and he has a small appetite.  That means I don’t get much of an opportunity to feed him lots of nutrient dense foods, so when he does eat I feel like I need to make it count!

I’m constantly trying to come up with ways to sneak in extra fat to bulk him up.  I slather extra butter on everything, give him creamy raw milk, full fat yogurt and anything else.

I set out to create a healthy whole food recipe full of healthy fats and also good flavor that he would gobble up and add some extra calories to his diet.

I created this recipe and it is a hit!  All of the kids ask for a “protein shake” in the evening when they want a smoothie to drink in the evenings after dinner.

This recipe is really tasty has lots of great flavor and there is no sugar.  Just a frozen banana and some dates.  It’s also great if you have a little one who has trouble going number 2!  Hey it happens!  The dates are a great source of fiber.  The peanut butter, coconut oil and chia seeds, coconut and whole milk provide some great healthy fats and quality calories.

All calories are not created equal.  Some are empty and do nothing for your body, others really benefit your body and this recipe is loaded with them.  This shake is thick, creamy, rich, satisfying and my kids think they are eating a real decadent treat.

Here it is!  My very own homemade whole food protein shake.

  1. What does the 1TBSP. Coconut in the middle of the recipe refer to; what type of coconut?

    1. Hi Lorna,

Thanks for pointing that out, I’ve fixed that, I meant 1 Tablespoon of shredded coconut:)
