Whole Food Alternatives To Sugar

Whole Food Alternatives To Sugar | https://www.hannahhepworth.com Learn which fruits are the best for sweetening your favorite treats. Fruits with the highest sugar content. Whole food sugar alternatives!

Do you want to eliminate sugar from your diet but still continue to enjoy sweet treats?

Who doesn’t??

For those of you that don’t know, I’ve decided to challenge myself to a year with no sugar.  Not even maple syrup, honey, stevia or those other natural sweeteners.  I find that my body is still super sensitive to even less processed, natural sugars.

What I am doing instead is sweetening my treats with fruit.  I realize it sounds a bit crazy.  I’ve found that people are quite protective of their sugar habits whether it be soda, chocolate stashed in the cupboard or muffins from the local bakery.

I think it’s all the more reason to cut back.  Maybe some people would disagree but so many people are addicted to sugar.  It’s been called a “recreational drug” by doctors.  Lately there are more and more studies coming out that fat is not the culprit for our high obesity rates, it’s actually SUGAR.  Sugar turns into fat and sugar has no nutrients. Fat actually IS beneficial and useful to the body.

When you eliminate sugar you’ve got to have some substitutes.  My 2 favorite fruits to use as sweeteners are dates and bananas.  These both work wonderfully to use for smoothies, ice creams, puddings and more. They are inexpensive and easy to buy at any grocery store.

However there are other fruits that are extra sweet and make great sugar substitutes.  Some people can’t have or don’t like bananas, that’s totally cool.  I’ve found a list of additional fruits that contain a higher fructose content which make them a great substitute for bananas or dates.

Fruits that have a higher sugar content include:

  • pineapple
  • pear
  • blueberries
  • cherries
  • mangoes
  • grapes
  • figs

I hope that gives you a few more ideas on how to sweeten your next smoothie or shake, and you can keep these extra sweet fruits stocked for the next time a sugary craving hits!

Have a wonderful, healthy day,

~Hannah

  1. I’m a big fan of sweetening with fruit 🙂 I went about 2 years without sugar (out of necessity rather than desire). Now that I can have sugar again, I do, but I do try to limit it. Unfortunately I’m allergic to bananas, pineapple & mango, so it makes fruit sweetening a little more difficult for me!

    1. That would be so hard! You are allergic to some really sweet fruits! Dates could work maybe then? Some people do stevia but I don’t know if I trust it… 🙂
