Homemade All Purpose Scouring Scrub

This homemade all purpose scouring scrub is kind of like a homemade version of those powdered abrasive scrubs but without the harsh chemicals and strong smell.  I originally saw a recipe for this on the Wellness Mama website (which is awesome and worth perusing). I tweaked it a bit and also added essential oils, as I feel anyone who is cleaning a toilet, sink or tub deserves to be smelling some nice smells, don’t you agree?

I’ve been making a huge effort to rid our house of all commercial cleaners for 2 reasons, one being the fact that there are so many chemicals in cleaners and I don’t really want that residue all over my home, not to mention the overwhelming smells that are a bit too much.  The second reason being it’s cheaper.  I’m really trying hard to use similar ingredients for all of my cleaning and also body care recipes so it’s easier to keep all ingredients on hand to make more.

This powder is great for sinks, tubs and toilets.  I use it in the toilet most mornings and I was very happy with how it cleaned our tub.  I highly recommend using pure therapeutic grade oils to gain the maximum anti-bacterial benefits.   You really can add any oil to your scrub,  the following oils are great for cleaning:

Lemon

Orange

Clove

Tea Tree

Thieves

Lavender

Cinnamon Bark

Eucalyptus

  1. I frequently use salt to scour my bathroom. It is a great tool that is natural! I never thought to actually make up a scrub though, that would probably be a bit more pleasant that pouring table salt everywhere! The addition of the essential oils sounds amazing!

    1. I’ve never used salt for cleaning until now, and it’s such a great gentle abrasive cleaner. I used sea salt which has bigger granules and it worked great.

Found your site on the Homestead Barn Hop. Just thought I would let you know(if you didn’t already) the lid from grated
parmesan cheese containers fit a regular mouth canning jar. I find them very useful, and I will be using them with this recipe
from now on. Thanks for posting this. I too am trying to get away from harmful chemical cleaner.

    1. That’s a great tip, I didn’t know that! I’m going to be asking everyone for their Parmesan cheese lids:)

You can also use the fine netting from vegetable bags and cut them to fit your jar. I have some shallots that came in a net bag that I’m going to use.

    1. That’s a great idea! I’m going to have to start saving those bags, thank you!
