5 Lessons I’ve Learned From Anxiety

5 Lessons I've Learned From Anxiety | https://www.hannahhepworth.com5 Lessons I’ve Learned From Anxiety

Anxiety can often feel like more of a curse than a blessing.  Interestingly enough, as I’ve struggled wit it over the years I’ve been able to learn so much from it.

Ever since I became a mother almost 9 years ago it seems that anxiety has been a prevalent theme in my life.  Day in and day out it has plagued me, some days to the point that I couldn’t even leave my house.

I’m not one to sit back and let things happen though.

I studied, read a mountain of books and searched for answers.

There were times when I felt like this curse of anxiety was a real pain in the neck.  It kept me from doing things I would have otherwise done.  A social engagement, saying yes to provide service to someone in need and the biggest ache of all was that I wasn’t being the mother and wife I truly felt I could be at that time.

As time has progressed I’ve learned to tame my anxiety through various natural methods.

Even during the darkest times I knew it was all for a purpose and that I would be stronger for having gone through it.

If you struggle with anxiety then I hope the following words will provide some sort of relief and inspiration to you.

We can all choose to learn from everything we experience and I hope you too are able to see that anxiety is not something to be ashamed and repressed by.  It really can make you a better person.

Here are 5 lessons I’ve learned from anxiety:

Patience

Patience is something that most of us strive to have more of.  My anxiety was not taken away with one little magic pill or prayer.  It has gone on for years.  I wanted it to magically disappear but these things rarely do.  They are there to teach us and make us better.  Through years of learning about anxiety I have also learned to be a little more patient and realize that good things take time and to slow down and enjoy the process of healing and appreciate every little achievement and step in the right direction.

Perseverance

I’ve learned perseverance over the years as I’ve moved forward 3 steps and then back 2 and then forward 2 steps and back 1.  When I felt like I was regressing I knew I just had to keep going.  Even though it may feel like you became anxious overnight, you’re body has been slowly breaking down over time and it will take time to heal.  Persevere even through the rough days and you will come out on top.

Empathy

When I hear stories of other women who struggle with anxiety my heart goes out to them.  I feel a little pang in my stomach because I know exactly how it feels.  I know how limiting it can be.  This doesn’t even go for just anxiety but any health issue that limits a person I truly have new eyes to see through and can understand how another person feels so much better now. I’m more understanding and loving towards others.

Natural Solutions

Through this experience of anxiety I’ve learned that there are SO MANY options out there for healing.  From supplements, herbs, special nutritional protocols, breathing, exercise and so many other changes YOU can make to balance your body.  You don’t have to rely on medication! My eyes have been opened to the world of natural health and wellness and a passion has been born within me.  Learning about your body and how you can improve your health is one of the most fun and empowering things you can do.

We All Have Struggles

When you have anxiety it’s really easy to think about yourself all the time.  You think about all your worries, the way your body feels, the dread of an upcoming event, it’s me, me, me.  You might begin to think that you have it pretty bad and it seems like everyone around you is leading this picture perfect life.  Honey, it ain’t true!  While they may not be dealing with the exact same thing you are they are likely dealing with their own little bag of troubles.  I have friends that deal with migraines, depression, arthritis and anxiety as well.  You aren’t the only one who is dealing with something.  Sometimes just knowing that can be comforting.

Anxiety CAN make you a better person!

Take 5 minutes to sit back and ponder a few things you may have learned from it.  How has it made you better?  Are you stronger, more patient, or kind to others with health problems?

Remember, we can choose to learn from everything we experience

What do you use to help with your anxiety? Which supplements have helped you? I’ve heard lots about Gaba & Glycine. Any other suggestions? 🙂

    1. I’ve heard about Glycine but I personally haven’t used it. I love GABA and used to take it daily (the powdered NOW brand) but don’t need it anymore. I take magnesium in the form of Natural Calm brand or soak my feet/body in epsom salt which is rich in magnesium. A multi vitamin without copped is also helpful. I will link to 2 in a blog post to come. I’ve had a lot of questions about this so I need to just write it all out. Omega 3 oil is helpful, there is a scientific study out on how it reduces anxiety. If you get sick when you are super stressed Vitamin C can help your adrenals and boost your immune system because that vitamin is used up quickly when you are stressed. In the winter if you get the blues take Vitamin D ( I like NOW brand gel caps, they are tiny and so easy to swallow). I also take SolarRay B-complex, very good for your nervous system which is always out of whack with anxiety. I take a chewable strawberry kiwi flavored one. I hope that helps you get started. I would read, Trudy Scott’s book The Anti-Anxiety Food Solution for more on nutrition help for anxiety as well as an amino acid questionnaire, actually the questionnaire is originally from Julia Ross’ book The Mood Cure, which is another book I highly recommend for anxiety. I will write about this today and publish a post next week! Good luck, thank you for reading and ask any other questions that arise:)
