Do you know anyone who just seems to be happy all the time?  Do you wish that you could be more like them?  Let’s face it, it’s hard to be happy all the time.  Things happen in life that tick us off and frustrate us.  I used to be frustrated ALL the time. But, I had a desire to be happier.

Over the past year I’ve really studied and thought about ways I can be happier.  Some things in life you don’t have a lot of control over but you DO have control over your attitude.  This is a continuous work in progress for anyone.

I have compiled a list of 10 things happy people do each day. This is merely a list of ideas.  I don’t necessarily do ALL of them EVERY day but I do MOST of them EVERY day…and you know what?  It does help you to be a happier person.

  1. PRAY: I’m not shy about the fact that I believe in God.  I pray daily, many times a day for strength and peace.  Whether you pray, meditate, do yoga, go to church or something else, get “spiritual” daily.  Whatever that means to you.
  2. GET FRESH AIR: There are many documented benefits of spending time in nature.  Even if you live in a busy city it is still beneficial to get outside for just 10 minutes and take a quick walk.  It cleanses your mind and invigorates your soul.
  3. SHOW GRATITUDE: Just the mindset of gratitude can be very powerful.  I have a gratitude journal that I try to write in daily 3-5 things that I am thankful for.  This helps you recognize your blessings and puts you in a place where you can receive MORE.
  4. EAT HEALTHY: I’m a huge advocate for eating healthy and cutting processed foods and chemicals out of our diet.  Plain and simple, eat real food. What you put in your body directly affects how you feel and how your brain functions.  Start by drinking a green smoothie each day or adding probiotic foods to your diet.  It can be so simple. Don’t worry about taking out a bunch of foods that you eat, just add healthy foods one at a time.
  5. TAKE TIME TO RELAX: We all have different ways we like to relax.  It could be watching TV, cleaning, reading a book, taking a drive, doing yoga, or many other activities.  Decide how you like to relax, and if it’s with people or maybe just by yourself.  Do it each day!  Don’t feel guilty about this.  I know mother’s may have a hard time with this but it’s imperative for your health to let yourself relax every single day.  Make this a priority!
  6. DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS: Essential oils can be used in many ways.  One way to use them is to purchase a simple diffuser and put any essential oil that makes you happy and smells good and place it in your home or office or wherever you spend most of your time.  Our sense of smell is a powerful thing, just smelling something that is pleasing can uplift our mood.  So diffuse those oils!  Diffusing can also help clean the air in your home or office as well so you’re doing double duty when you diffuse.
  7. READ GOOD BOOKS: I’m an absolute bookworm.  I have a stack of books on my nightstand and am always getting books from my local library.  If I had an extra $1000 I would probably go straight to my amazon wish list and purchase all the books that my library doesn’t have!  Pick up a book and read each day.  Whether it’s a self help book to help you to think more positively or a fantasy book that sweeps you away to a new world, find a book, or magazine, that is uplifting and read every day.  I like to read for about an hour before bed to wind down.  This also helps me sleep!
  8. CONNECT WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE: Realistically you won’t be around positive people 100% of the time.  But, you have some choice over the friends you choose and the people you invite into your life.  You can also connect with positive people online.  Find blogs that uplift you or facebook pages to follow that offer encouragement daily.  I really try hard to keep about 50% of my content on my facebook page positive and uplifting.  You can never have too much positivity!
  9. LEARN: Learning something each day helps keep you moving forward and progressing.  It helps us feel productive and we use our brain in a different way.  Pick something you’d like to learn more about and get books on it, find You Tube videos or take a class and enjoy learning!
  10. SLEEP: Sleep is so important for our brains.  When we are sleep deprived we feel grouchy, more stressed and have a harder time being optimistic.  Make sleep a priority and your body will thank you.  So will your family!

  1. Great advice! I have found that incorporating many of these into my routine have made a significant impact on my level of joy throughout the day. I think these are especially important in seasons when you might feel too busy to fit them in. I believe we were created with the need to relax and be refilled.

    1. I totally agree! We need these things most when we feel that we don’t have the time for them. It’s so hard to slow down sometimes!
