Using Essential Oils In the Bathtub

Sometimes it feels so wonderful to soak in a tub and ease your sore muscles.  After a day of working hard in the garden or going on a hike with the family or maybe you have a cold and your body aches.  There’s nothing like a relaxing bath.

What makes a hot bath even better?  Some wonderful smelling essential oils!

I’ve personally used 1-2 drops of lavender in my kid’s bath at night with great results.  They love the smell and it gets them all nice and relaxed for bed!

When essential oils are used in water it enhances the absorption of the oils into our body.  It can soothe sore muscles, relax our minds, lift our mood or put us in the right frame of mind for sleep.  You not only receive the wonderful benefit of soaking the oils through your skin but also breathing them in.

You do want to stay away from “hot” oils because it could cause skin sensitivity, some of these oils include, clove, cinnamon and Thieves.

Some of the best oils to use in your bathtub are Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Rosewood, Sage, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, and Bergamot.

It’s best not to add the oils directly to your tub.  Oils won’t naturally  blend into your bathwater.  Instead they stay very concentrated and float on top.  This will cause direct contact with skin and burning in sensitive places!  You want them to be diluted. You can do this a couple ways.

  1. Mix 3-6 drops (1-2 drops for children) of pure therapeutic grade essential oils with 1 cup of epsom salt.  Then add to the tub as the water is filling up to help disperse the oils.  Epsom salt is also wonderful for sore muscles due to it’s high magnesium content.
  2. Another way to disperse the oils is to squeeze a couple tablespoons of bath gel into your palm and add the oils right to the gel.  Then mix it in your hand a bit and add to the tub as it is filling up.

Now you know how to use essential oils safely in the bath.  Go take a bath tonight and start reaping the benefits today!

Essential oils are so versatile and so wonderful to incorporate into your every day life.  Be sure to use high quality pure essential oils to obtain the therapeutic benefits.
